Racism in America Racism discrimination has been one of our society’s most horrible social problems. In the words of the famous Martin Luther King judging an individual by the color of their skin rather than the content of their character can be a very dehumanizing experience that can have lasting effects on an individual life. Racism in America has not come to a cease. Racism promotes negative personal relations between people of different cultures. I believe slavery started around the 1500s and 1600s. Blacks become property of whites and slave trading meant capitalism for white’s .Racism meant that one group of people was supposedly superior to another. â€Å"Racism is a particular form of oppression. It stems from discrimination against a group of people based on the idea that some inherited characteristic, such as skin color, makes them inferior to their oppressors. Yet the concepts of â€Å"race† and â€Å"racism† are modern inventions. They arose and became part of the dominant ideology of society in the context of African slave trade at the dawn of capitalism in the 1500s and 1600s.†(Lance Selfa) Education taught way different depending whether it’s a high-income suburbs or low –poverty crime area.
